History

1919

Peoria, Illinois set the stage for Local 55’s charter on September 22, 1919. On that day, 17 individuals made a commitment to keep the nation moving with the best construction professionals in the industry, and they played important roles in growing Local 55 and spreading professionalism across the industry.

1999

On July 1, 1999, Local 55 grew overnight with the merger that brought Local 92 from Springfield, IL, into Local 55’s jurisdiction. This merger opened up possibilities for Local 55, allowing the team to hire a full-time business representative who would look out for the best interests of the members. Two months later, IUEC Local 55 celebrated its 100th anniversary with a celebration that brought together current and retired members

Today

Today, Local 55 represents 112 IUEC construction professionals across a total of 45 counties in central Illinois. The office and apprenticeship training program are located in the Peoria Labor Temple, one of the few “houses of labor” that are still standing in the nation today. We take pride in our roots and we look forward to continuing to serve the communities of central Illinois.

Thanks to the Continuing Education (CE) courses offered through the National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP), the members of Local 55 can maintain their position as the most highly trained and educated professionals in the industry, as well as the safest.
